During the school year, the Rutabaga After-School Program at St. Paul’s serves MacGregor Elementary students in grades 1st through 5th. Our program aims to provide academic and enrichment opportunities to students while fostering emotional, social, and spiritual growth. Students are encouraged to discover new interests, gain self-confidence, and grow in God’s love. An active partnership between students and their families, school administration, staff and volunteers, and the surrounding community has contributed to the success and growth of the After-School Program.

Rutabaga participates in a lot of fun and educational activities like field trips, science and art projects, and a career series to learn from church and community members.

Volunteering at the Rutabaga After-School Program

Working for Rutabaga changed my life. I started out as a volunteer 2 days a week and fell in love. I was hired and worked as a teacher for the rest of the year. I can’t imagine having not gotten to know all of those wonderful kids. I am so grateful for the time I was able to spend there and I’m so thankful for the program.
— Sara Anderson, Rutabaga volunteer turned teacher
I started volunteering at Rutabaga to get some youth back in my life and boy did I ever. I had almost as much fun as them on whatever adventures the day held, whether it was doing science experiments, making art, going to the butterfly museum, or simply dancing to a silly song. My favorite moments were easily the times when I got opportunities for 1 on 1 moments with them: Aaron calling me over the second I walked in to sit with him during snack and tell me about his day, Ahtziri’s love of me as her swing pusher, or the eagerness of Pablo to improve his math skills with me. Those moments really affirmed my power to make a meaningful impact through just showing up and being me.

I love coming into the Rutabaga program because I know that I’ll be putting a smile on the kids faces and that I’ll walk out with a bigger smile on my face. The kids and teachers are really special and I’m sure we can all say that we love being a part of Rutabaga.
