Primetimers: Tour Historic Architecture Near St. Paul's

  • St. Paul's United Methodist Church 5501 Main St Houston, TX 77004 USA (map)

Renowned architectural historian Stephen Fox will lead the Primetimers on an architectural history tour of the area around St. Paul’s. This two-hour bus tour will be on Thursday, August 11.

This excursion will fan out from the church to examine the history, neighborhoods, and varied architecture of Houston’s old South End, today’s Midtown-Medical Center area.

Tour highlights will include other historic churches of South Main, the former Sears store (now the Ion), the former San Jacinto High School (now Houston Community College), the area’s museums, the Rice University campus, and Hermann Park.

Fox teaches classes on the history of Houston architecture at both Rice University and the University of Houston. His scholarship examines the ways architecture engages social constructs such as class identity, cultural distinction, and regional differentiation.

He is the author of or contributor to many architectural publications. Long associated with the Houston Seminar, he has led several of its best reviewed study tours.

The Primetimers’ tour will be from noon to 2 pm. Fox will give introductory remarks at 11:40 am in the Youth Center as the group concludes a box lunch that will be served at 11 am.
