What separates professional modern or contemporary art from what a kindergartner might compose?
MFAH docent Gerry Aitken will explain as she gives the Primetimers an irreverent, yet informative, look at contemporary art, using examples within the MFAH’s own collection.
“If you love it, hate it, or are simply confused by it,” she writes, “you won’t want to miss this overview of modern art, which covers images from the mid-19th century to what is current in today’s art world.”
Using examples from the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston’s collection, Cubism, Abstract Impressionism, Surrealism, and several other “isms” will be examined.
“The addition of art-related humor (that’s the irreverent part) should bring a few smiles along with the serious information.”
Since retiring from a 30-year career as an HISD counselor, Gerry has been an active volunteer with the Houston Grand Opera Guld as well as MFAH where she is a past-president of the MFAH Guild and currently president-elect the Ima Hogg Ceramic Circle.
She also is in training to be a guide at Brazos Bend State Park and particularly enjoys handling the snakes in the Nature Center.
Gather in Fondren Hall at 10:30am Thursday, May 14, and the program will begin at 11. A $10 lunch will be served to those who RSVP by May 12 to primetimers@stpaulshouston.org. Pre-pay through the Blue “Give Online” button, selecting “one-time,” and writing “Primetimers May lunch” in the Notes.
