Primetimers: Houston Suffragists

  • St. Paul's United Methodist Church 5501 Main St Houston, TX 77004 USA (map)

On Thursday, February 12, St. Paul’s Primetimers present Rae Bryant of the Houston Genealogical Forum who will tell us about the Houston Suffragists Project.

Leading up to the ultimate ratificaton of the 19th Amendment on August 18, 1920, the general assumption was that Southern Women were not interested in voting, and that included Texas Women. Did it include St. Paul’s Women or were some of our forebearers among the Houston Suffragist leaders? It also was assumed that the Texas poll tax would curtail women’s voting even if they had the Constitutional right to vote and wanted to do so.

What was the real picture?

In late 2019 Rae Bryant and friends of the Houston Genealogical Forum took it upon themselves to find the answers. They are still looking — and finding more.

Come to the February 12 Primetimers gathering and find out more, too. What have they learned about the unique situation of Houston Suffragists and how do they continue to learn more?

Gather in the Fellers Room (S-312) at 10:30am to visit with friends — and bring others as well. Program begins at 11am. A $10 lunch will be served at noon to those who RSVP by Monday, February 9, to Primetimers@stpaulshouston.org or by calling Laura Althaus at 713-528-0527.
