Primetimers: USO in Houston

  • St. Paul's United Methodist Church 5501 Main St Houston, TX 77004 USA (map)

Since 1941, the USO has strengthened America’s active Armed Forces members (Active Duty, National Guard & Reservists) by keeping them connected to family, home, and country throughout their service to the nation.

In Houston, the USO provides programs and services to 156,000 military members and their families per year, who participate in programs and visit the USO Houston Centers at Bush Intercontinental Airport, Hobby Airport, and the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) in downtown Houston.

Not a federal government agency, the USO is a congressionally chartered, highly rated 501©(3) charitable organization powered by financial donations and a family of volunteers — 250 in Houston — to accomplish its mission of strength and connection.

Among those volunteers is St. Paul’s member and Primetimers Steering Committee Facilitator Dave Estes, who arranged this month’s program with Espiridion (Speedy) Zuniga, Senior Center Operations Specialist for North Houston USO, as speaker.

On Thursday, November 14, in Fondren Hall he will talk about the USO in Houston at 12:30pm after the 11:30am lunch. To partake of the $10 lunch, RSVP by Monday, November 11, to primetimers@stpaulshouston.org. The program is free of charge.

An Army veteran with the Army Commendation Medal (2 Oak Leaf Cluster) and other honors, Zuniga also has served as a Department of Defense Police Officer at Fort Sam Houston, the Director of Operations for Heroes Baseball, and State of Texas Baseball Chairman for the American Legion.

If all you know about the USO is from old WWII movies and Bob Hope TV specials, come learn about today’s USO — in Houston and beyond.
