May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us, Selah
that your way may be known upon earth, your saving power among all nations.
Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you.
Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you judge the peoples with equity
and guide the nations upon earth. (Psalm 67:1-4)
Lent for me is my soul's "spring cleaning". Just as I purge my home of clutter so that its rooms can better welcome the dinner guests that my wife and I love to host, Lent is a time for me to scrutinize and modify my life so that my soul is prepared to embrace the joy of Easter. I must admit, however, that identifying and breaking habits that separate me from God is difficult — much more difficult than cleaning my home. But I make an effort to break these habits because I believe that I am blessed as a child of God and therefore called to seek ways that I can deepen my relationship with Him.
The good news of today's Psalm is the availability of God's saving power to everyone. Really, everyone. We should rejoice in the Psalm's assurance that we are all equally blessed as children of God. May this good news inspire us during the season of Lent to prepare our souls for the joy of Easter so that we can carry the joy of God's everlasting love out into the world!
My God, help me to replace old habits with new disciplines that bring me closer to You so that I can celebrate the joy of Easter with renewed and strengthened faith in Your redeeming and everlasting love. Amen.
