When Jacob was told, ‘Your son Joseph has come to you’, he summoned his strength and sat up in bed. And Jacob said to Joseph, ‘God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and he blessed me, and said to me, “I am going to make you fruitful and increase your numbers; I will make of you a company of peoples, and will give this land to your offspring after you for a perpetual holding.” (Genesis 48:2-4)

In this passage, Jacob, just before his death, reveals to his son Joseph, God's promise to perpetually bless the Hebrew people.  Through the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, this promise has been extended to us.

Like the best of parents, God promises to always be with us; always concerned and protective, and offering love and hope even when we are distant or lost.  His perpetual promise is to remain our refuge and comfort now and forever, a legacy of love and compassion given freely in the fervent hope that we will all embrace this gift.  And the greatest gift we can give our children is to instill in them the firm assurance that this legacy of love and support belongs to them as well and always will be there never to be withdrawn.

God help us all to fully accept and understand Your promise to always be with us and within us and to daily embrace your loving presence and comfort.
