So they went up out of Egypt and came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan. And they told him, ‘Joseph is still alive! He is even ruler over all the land of Egypt.’ He was stunned; he could not believe them. But when they told him all the words of Joseph that he had said to them, and when he saw the wagons that Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of their father Jacob revived. Israel said, ‘Enough! My son Joseph is still alive. I must go and see him before I die.’ (Genesis 45:25-28)
In Oct 1994, I got the call that my brother had died of a heart attack at the age of 45. Although I had dinner with my brother just days before, my first thought was “I wish I had another chance to see him again.”
This was a wake up call for me to focus on what is important in life. We all have them; death of someone young; a friend who has cancer; someone who is struggling in a relationship. It is so easy to get wrapped up in life's details of the unimportant and move away from God's plan.
Jacob's reaction to the news Joseph was alive was one of love and what is important. Not only did he need to see Joseph, not for what Joseph could now do for him, but because he loved him. At the same time, Jacob was also showing love towards his other sons who had previously told Jacob that Joseph was dead. Jacob was now able to bring his family together to implement God's plan.
Lord help us to approach each day/situation with love and focus on what is important and your plan for us. Amen.
