For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written,

‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.’
(1 Corinthians 1:18-19)

During the hectic schedules of our lives, it is all too easy to lose sight of God and the fact that, for us, Christ was crucified on the cross. I constantly find my focus gravitating towards MY work, MY wants, and MY plans instead of God’s will. The temptation to fixate on our own accomplishments and goals is so great, that we can forget about our true purposes and callings.

However, reading these verses in 1 Corinthians serves as a humbling reminder that despite our best intentions, any wisdom or discernment that we develop separately from God’s design ultimately amounts to only foolishness. Although there is continuous pressure for us to be successful, well liked, hardworking, knowledgeable (and many other attributes) we should all take comfort in God’s unconditional love as demonstrated by Christ’s sacrifice.

Heavenly Father, please help us to not get caught up in earthly pursuits and interests that distract us from your glory and will. Amen.
