O the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!

‘For who has known the mind of the Lord?
Or who has been his counselor?
Or who has given a gift to him,
to receive a gift in return?’

For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory for ever. Amen. (Romans 11:33-36)

“Why?” is the question we so often ask God but are so often left without an answer. The limitations of the human mind to understand God’s plan, God’s judgments, frustrate us endlessly. For me, this passage takes one of the most confusing, even infuriating, aspects of faith and turns it on its head, transforming it into something mysterious, even beautiful. We don’t have answers to many of the questions that trouble us. These questions will continue to trouble us. But in spite of our doubts and questions, we place our faith in the knowledge that God is powerful and wise beyond our imagination. So rather than throwing our hands up in despair at the limitations of our own knowledge, we raise our hands up to celebrate the mysterious wisdom of God.

God, help us find peace in your wisdom. Amen.
