Therefore you have no excuse, whoever you are, when you judge others; for in passing judgement on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, are doing the very same things. (Romans 2:1)

Where I have trouble with this scripture is in differentiating between criticizing and judging. How do we evaluate behaviors and actions to set standards for ourselves without turning it into criticism of others’ behaviors and actions? It’s a risky business, Paul says in this passage. We find ourselves criticizing people regularly when they are not in agreement with the way we think and do things. We must be careful not to move from criticism of a person’s words or actions to a condemnation of their soul. Only God can judge a person’s intentions and He will judge ours as well.

Lord, help us to remember that we are all part of this world and Your kingdom. Amen.
