So now, O Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you? Only to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments of the Lord your God and his decrees that I am commanding you today, for your own well-being. (Deuteronomy 10:12-13)

What does the Lord require of me? To fear Him, to love Him, to obey His commandments and to serve Him. Obeying God's commandments is an act of both fear and love toward Him, especially since God commands these things only in love toward me. By following God's commandments, ultimately, all things will work for my good. The more I focus on God and God's word, the less stress and anguish I experience in my life. Focusing on God is for my own well-being.

What also stands out to me in this passage is the call and commandment to serve. To serve God is to serve humanity. God commands me to serve my community, both locally and globally. I hear His call and I will serve with my whole heart.

Lord, help us to focus on and follow your life-giving commandments. Help us to keep open hearts and welcome opportunities to serve. Amen.
