“The Lord will protect you on your journeys—whether going or coming—from now until forever.” Psalm 121:8

Looking at the Psalmist’s words reminds us of the poem “Footprints in the Sand.”  In this poem, a believer has a dream looking back on his life in a conversation with the Lord.  Most of the time, the believer and the Lord walk side-by-side, leaving footprints together in the sand.  However, the believer notices that at life’s most difficult times, only one set of footprints is left on the sand.  Upon noticing this, the believer asks the Lord why the Lord would leave him at the most troublesome times in his life.  In response to the believer’s question, the Lord responds, “My precious, precious child, I love you, and I would never, never leave you during your times of trial and suffering. When you saw only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.” Some of our journeys, we know will be difficult.  We ask the Lord for protection and He provides for us.  At other times, we look back on difficult times, and it is only then that we may realize how the Lord was truly carrying us in His loving arms.  It is looking back retrospectively on those times when the Lord provided for our unknown needs that we realize how much He loves us.

Heavenly Father. Thank you for being with us in all of our journeys. While there are many sources for directions and turns, help us to remember that you are the only true compass. Amen.
