“Surely have the grace of God and the free gift in the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abounded for the many.” Romans 5:15b

This unique day begins the season of Lent. It is also one time when our appearance is physically altered.  Ashes are marked on our foreheads in the sign of the cross, symbolizing both our separation from God and our mortality.  An ancient rabbinic expression which pairs two seemingly contradictory statements, “I am dust and ashes,” and “for me the universe was created,” sums up for me the message of Ash Wednesday.  We remember yet again our immense need for God and God’s care along with God’s astounding, unfathomable love for us.  Let us begin 40 Days Together.

As beloved creatures of yours, O Lord, we listen in gratitude for your voice in our world.  Amen.
