The 12th anniversary of the Choral Scholars program will be marked with a concert on Sunday, May 21, at 4 p.m. in the Sanctuary.

The concert will celebrate sacred choral music’s rich legacy with selections from worship service music sung over the previous school year, including folk songs, spirituals, and original compositions from American and Norwegian composers and arrangers. The program listing:

  • Give Me Jesus – African-American gospel arrangement
  • Unclouded Day – Gospel favorite set in bluegrass vocal style
  • Were You There -  arrangement of African-American spiritual with soprano solo, organ, and cello
  • Adam Lay Ybounden – Rhythmic setting of anonymous 15th century poem by American composer Carson Cooman
  • Esto Les Digo – Original setting of Matthew 18 in Spanish by Houston composer Kingley Lange
  • Poor Man Lazarus – African-American spiritual arrangement by Jester Hariston
  • Even When He is Silent – setting by Kim Andre Arnesen of a poem written by a Concentration Camp prisoner
  • Battle of Jericho – rousing arrangement by American composer and arranger Moses Hogan
  • From a Distance – by singer-songwriter Julie Gold

The focus of the choir is to study, rehearse, and perform music from diverse historical and cultural traditions in an historic setting and for a community actively committed to excellence in sacred choral music. Over the past 12 years, more than 200 advanced high school singers from the greater Houston area have auditioned and trained for this important endeavor, providing music in worship for St. Paul’s 9:45 a.m. worship service.

These vocalists also have represented St. Paul’s beyond that service. Most notable was their appearance as a demonstration choir at the 2013 American Choral Directors Association national conference. Locally, the choir has presented concerts during the Christmas season at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Chase Bank, and the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center’s Jesse H. Jones Rotary House International.

A reception in honor of these outstanding musicians will follow the concert.

Eddie Quaid has directed the Choral Scholars since the second year. Accompanying the Choral Scholars are Ken Coleman, St. Paul’s Assistant Organist, and Bryan Anderson, Organ Scholar.
