This year’s annual Service of Advent Lessons and Carols sung by the St. Paul’s Choir and the Treble Choir will be followed by a performance with brass of Daniel Pinkham’s Christmas Cantata.
The service on Sunday, December 3, begins at a new time — 5 pm — and marks the beginning of the church’s liturgical year. The traditional scripture lessons look forward to the coming of Christ with carols responding to each lesson.
Divided into three movements, the Christmas Cantata begins with a statement asking the shepherds what they have seen. The second movement has a lyrical, arched melody in the brass choir and organ over which is spun the mysterious choral line, “O Magnum Mysterium” (O Great Mystery). The closing movement, with its exhortation of joy, tells of the angels singing to the shepherds.
A dessert party hosted by the Youth and their families will follow in the Youth Center on the first floor of the Sanctuary building.
