Salt & Light will kick off the new year on January 15 with baseball. The retired baseball coach of the University of Central Florida and St. Paul's member Jay Bergman will talk about his coaching career and how his faith helped him along the way.
Bergman began his coaching career in 1967 at Seminole (Florida) Community College. From there he went to the University of Florida, first as an assistant coach and then as head coach, winning the Southeastern Conference (SEC) championship In 1981.
From there, Jay moved to the University of Central Florida, remaining until retiring in 2008. During his 25 years at Central Florida, his team won the Atlantic Sun Conference (ASC) Championship eight times, and he was designated the ASC Coach of the Year three times.
His teams had an overall record of 1,390-786-3. At retirement, his 1,148 Division I wins as head coach ranked him eighth among active coaches and 23rd on the NCAA's all-time list. More than 100 of Coach Bergman's former players signed professional baseball contracts.
Salt & Light is St. Paul's activity-based program for senior, but one does not to be of a certain age or affiliated with St. Paul's to attend.
